Playwright: Bella Ponyton Director: Tara Matkosky Produced: Boston University
About
This premiere production of Pope Joan is a story of a man, Gerard, and a woman, Joan. They struggle being together because of the religious hierarchy in-which Joan is impersonating a man to become a priest. She eventually becomes the pope, but it’s her unwillingness to give up the church and live her lige with Gerard that destroys any hope of a future for them. The show begins with Gerard in a cell waiting to be executed and finds solace in giving confession to a woman. The entire play is a jumble of flashbacks forcing Gerard to relive the past.
